Help needed for Anniversary Edition of Susquehanna Ripples

The March issue of the Susquehanna Ripples will be a special Anniversary Issue. There will be many things included in this issue to highlight things over the past 50 years. I am asking all of you to consider adding something to this edition. Whether it be a picture, story, memory (vibert box project, stream restoration, fly tying class’s, Trout Kickoff, etc), tribute to an individual, or whatever you think appropriate, please do so.

Existing 50 years is a tremendous accomplishment that we should be proud of. We have been fortunate to have had many very dedicated individuals who put in countless hours into this organization and into the various projects that we have undertaken through the years. We have also been fortunate to have been able to work with a number of other organizations, groups, and individuals in order to accomplish our goals. Central Pennsylvania is a much better place now because of the work and dedication of the individuals of this organization.

I have received some items so far that will be included in the Ripples as well as a booklet that will be made available at our anniversary dinner on April 5. We will also be posting things on our website in the near future as well.

Again, thank you for everything that you do, and have done for this organization and if you do submit something, you can do so by email to susquehannatu@gmail.com or through the mail to me at (Bob Baker, 821 Wilson Street, Williamsport, PA 17701-5449). Please include your name with your submission and if you wish to remain anonymous, will make sure that your submission is anonymous in the newsletter.

Scam Invoices for TROUT magazine

Some Trout Unlimited members recently   received an invoice from Platinum Publishing Service located in White City,   Oregon, for renewal of TROUT magazine at a cost of $79.95. This is not a legitimate invoice   from Trout Unlimited. Click   here to view an example of the notice in question.TU is in no way affiliated with Platinum   Publishing. If you receive an invoice from Platinum Publishing for a renewal   of your TROUT magazine, please disregard that invoice, but rest assured   tu.org and TU’s Woolly Bugger, WV, post office box are fully operational,   secure and ready to handle your membership dues and contributions.

We are not clear at this time how this   company obtained mailing addresses for TU members, but we suspect they have   been taken from fly fishing industry magazine lists that Platinum Publishing   features on their website. We will be initiating legal notification to   Platinum Publishing to immediately cease-and-desist this unauthorized   activity of billing for TROUT magazine.

Thank you for your continued membership   support.

Sincerely,
Bryan Moore

House Bill 1576 to be discussed at the Loyalsock Creek Watershed Meeting Tuesday October 22, 2013

This is being passed on to you for your information.

“Hello, Everyone!

I have an update on what will be happening at our Loyalsock Creek Watershed Association meeting on Tuesday, October 22, at 7:00 pm at the Plunketts Creek Fire Hall in Barbours.  In addition to an up-date on on-going projects by Steve Szoke,  the Pa Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will be sending a representative, Jim Schaeffer, to talk about the Endangered Species Coordination Act, also know as House Bill 1576.

I am concerned about this legislation for several reasons.  As you may know,  Dr. Jon Niles has been collecting data on our smallest un-named tributaries and finding that about half have native trout populations.  Dr. Niles submits the data to the PFBC, and in a timely fashion, these small tributaries with wild trout populations receive extra protection.

One of the consequences of HB 1576 is that it will take longer for wild trout streams to get protection.  Another consequence is that instead of the “experts” making the decision what and how threatened and endangered species are protected, “politics” gets thrown into the mix.  As the Bill is currently written, some of our wild trout streams may lose their protection.

This threat isn’t just about fish.  HB 1576 will change how all threatened and endangered species of animals in Pennsylvania are protected, including birds, reptiles and amphibians.

This threat isn’t about just animals either.  It is about flooding!  Part of protecting headwater streams involves maintaining the forests adjacent to the streams.  When forests get converted into impermeable surfaces, more water enters our streams even faster during heavy rains.  Our Watershed is prone to flooding and we need to do what we can to protect ourselves.

Please plan to attend this meeting.   Bring any friends who might be interested, and feel free to forward this email.

Sincerely,

Carol Kafer,  President”

2 Articles added to News

Two articles have been added to the news section of the website.  The first article is from Chesapeake Bay Foundation which has recently put out the second in a series of fact sheets on water quality issues facing Pennsylvania saying nearly 20,000 miles of rivers and streams in the state are polluted and do not meet water quality standards.

The second article is from the PA Fish and Boat Commission and issues an alert to contain an invasive species known as the New Zealand mudsnail.  This was recently found in Spring Creek, Centre County.

HOUSE BILL 1576 / SENATE BILL 1047 THREATEN PENNSYLVANIA’S STREAMS, FISH & WILDLIFE

Please help in PATU and TU efforts to oppose HB1576 and SB1047, which will have a major impact on Pennsylvania’s wild trout waters, threatened & endangered species, and the way that PFBC & PGC operate. We need your help in getting our message out to the legislators.

Please see the attached flyer that explains the bill and what is at stake if the bill passes. Please share the flyer with your friends and other conservation organizations in which you belong or in your area.
