     The October meeting of the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be held on Wednesday October 14, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church (102 E. 3rd Street, Williamsport, use rear entrance) starting at 7:30 pm.  Joe Radley will be discussing what an angler can do over the winter months when there are no streams to fish. He will give the many options available to anglers so that they may get ready for the next fishing season.  This will be a great presentation and some new ideas may be presented. The meeting is free and open to the public and we hope to see you there.

Trout anglers who want an experience targeting bigger fish will have the opportunity to catch 14”-20” trout in eight Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters, unveiled here today at the quarterly meeting of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC).

Under the program, approximately 3,200 large trout will be distributed among the eight waters, one in each commissioner district. The trout will be stocked at a rate of up to 250 trout per mile, which is comparable to the numbers of fish of this size in Pennsylvania’s best wild trout waters.

The eight waters include:

• Chester County, Middle Branch White Clay Creek, Section 3 (1.67 miles)
• Dauphin County, Wiconisco Creek, Section 3 (0.74 miles)
• Lackawanna/Wyoming Counties, South Branch Tunkhannock Creek, Section 4 (0.99 miles)
• Lawrence County, Neshannock Creek, Section 3 (2.67 miles)
• Lycoming County, Loyalsock Creek, Section 5 (1.49 miles)
• Potter County, First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek, Section 4 (1.67 miles)
• Somerset County, Laurel Hill Creek, Section 3 (2.33 miles)
• Westmoreland County, Loyalhanna Creek, Section 3 (1.67 miles)

“We wanted to add an element of excitement to trout fishing and at the same time remind anglers that the trout season can extend well into the summer,” said PFBC Executive Director John Arway. “These are the biggest stocked trout we raise, so anglers will definitely enjoy catching them. And the waters are regulated under Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only (DHALO) regulations, which provides the opportunity to catch these fish multiple times.”

Under DHALO regulations, waters are open to fishing year-round. But anglers may harvest trout only between June 15 and Labor Day and the trout have to be a minimum of nine inches. From the day after Labor Day until June 15, these waters are managed on a catch-and-release-only basis and the creel limit is zero. Tackle is limited to artificial lures and flies.

Arway added that similar programs have proven very popular on other waters, such as Pine Creek in Lycoming County.

“These programs have successfully demonstrated that destination fisheries can be created, drawing anglers from across the state and even the country and providing an economic boost to local communities,” he said. “We’re confident our program will have the same effect and we’ll draw anglers to each of these eight destinations.”

The waters in Dauphin and Chester counties will be stocked with the larger trout in advance of the regional opening day of trout season on April 2. The other waters will be stocked prior to the April 16 statewide opener for trout. Each of the eight waters will also receive an in-season stocking in late April. Both stockings will include a number of these larger fish. The PFBC website or FishBoatPA app should be consulted for the actual stocking dates.

PFBC staff presented the concept of the new program at the last quarterly meeting, and then ran an online promotion asking anglers to submit suggestions for the name. More than 1,550 submissions were received with 144 different names recommended by the public.
“A committee reviewed the selections and the Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters name was chosen,” said Leroy Young, Director of the Bureau of Fisheries. “This name ties the program uniquely to Pennsylvania and includes the new Stocked Trout Waters name, which replaces the previously named Approved Trout Waters beginning in 2016.”

This should give everyone attending time to meet some of the icons of PA’s Bamboo Rod and Hackle world,  have a book signed, receive some tips, and learn from the experts present. A Marinaro “Maxwell” bamboo rod is being built by Bill Harms and Tom Whittle, two of the finest cane rod builders today, and authors of the book Split and Glued by Vincent C. Marinaro, Both wiil be present for the rod raffle drawing. This rod is being built from one of Marinaro’s bamboo culm’s  using his tapers.  This rod, plus the 21″ Brown Trout carving by Steve Kimple, mounted on a solid walnut base, will be raffled off at the at the banquet at the end of the evening. Let us not forget the events of September 11, 2001 nor the many innocent lives that were lost on that day and all the lives that have been changed permanently.  We are stronger now because of that and must never forget

You are reminded that the September meeting of the Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be held Wednesday September 9 from 2pm until dark at the Greenwood Hunting Lodge.  After sending out the announcement in the September issue of the Susquehanna Ripples and posting on the website, we learned that John Arway, Executive Director, and Eric Hussar, District 5 Commissioner of the Pa. Fish & Boat Commission, will be attending the picnic.  This will be a great opportunity for us to meet with them and hear about coming activities

The Greenwood Hunting Lodge property contains two lakes and holds a variety of fish  Fishing will be all-tackle.  A gas grill will be available for cooking, and the Chapter will have hot dogs, rolls, and drinks.  Bring your own meat if you wish, and a dish to share if you can.

Our program will be a presentation from John Arway and Eric Hussar and then we will discuss how we might market the large inventory of fly tying materials which we now have.  You are welcome to arrive anytime after 2 P.M.  We will adjourn at dark. Plan to eat about 6 P.M.

    Directions to Greenwood Hunting Club are as follows:  Take Rt. 14 north.  1 mile north of Marsh Hill Meat Market, turn left on Frozen Run Road (dirt road) – proceed 4 miles up to the Greenwood Hunting Lodge.  We hope to see you all there.

A lone fisherman on Pine Creek on this Labor Day.  I watched him for a little while and did not see him catch anything but it was a great day to be on the water.  A little further down the stream was another fly fisherman trying his luck near the Slate Run Bridge.

A new stocked trout program will be introduced by PFBC in 2016 in which approximately 10 percent of the larger 2- to 3-year-old-trout in the PFBC hatchery system that are stocked each year will be allocated to eight waters currently managed under Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only regulations. These fish, which will measure from 14” to more than 20” in length, will be stocked at a rate of up to 250 trout per mile, which is comparable to the numbers of fish of this size in Pennsylvania’s best wild trout waters. By contrast, the current stocking rate for 2- to 3-year-old-trout statewide in the catchable trout program is about 5-10 per mile.

The eight streams yet to be named will be distributed broadly across the state so that at least one water is located within a reasonable distance of all of Pennsylvania’s anglers.

Currently this program is unnamed, and PFBC is seeking the public’s help in naming the program. There are a number of names that have been considered by staff, but you may have other better ideas. The names proposed thus far are: Premium Stocked Trout, Trophy Stocked Trout, Lunker Stocked Trout and Blue Ribbon Trout. You can vote for one of these titles or write in your own nomination at  Big Trout Program.

PFBC staff will review all of the proposals and a name will be selected prior to the next  Commission meeting on September 28 and 29, 2015. Both the program name and the names of the selected waters will be released at the September meeting.

     The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission continues to add new streams to both the Wild Trout Stream list and the Class A Wild Trout Stream list. In July, an additional 28 streams were added to the Class A list and 54 streams to the Wild Trout Stream list. TU is very encouraged by this year’s listing of streams and the continued proposals for additional listings from the 600 streams that are now awaiting designation. At the upcoming September meeting, the Commissioners will consider 102 streams for Wild Trout Stream designation and  40 stream sections for Class A Wild Trout designation.

     The comments that have made in the past six months have made a difference in getting protections for these streams. Please remember that this comment period is unique to this new list of streams; the comments received earlier do not pertain to the September list. If you have commented in the past — thank you! — but you will need to comment during this current time period for the September meeting. Please take a moment before August 17 to submit comments in support of the listings.

     Protecting Pennsylvania’s trout streams with appropriate biological designations helps to ensure that a stream’s water quality will be maintained to support fishing opportunities for today’s anglers and for future generations. ·    Please urge the PFBC to continue to move streams from the list of “recently surveyed” to formal wild trout stream listing at each PFBC meeting.   Please consider sharing this information with your local watershed partners and fellow sportsmen clubs, and urging them to write letters/submit comments in support of the listings. .
